Taste of the Valley
Imagine yourself in the center of an intriguing art gallery. Imagine yourself seated at a table here dining on all sorts of wonderful food and beverage delectables. You've just imagined yourself at The Eclectic Cafe, a bright spot on the North Hollywood, or "NoHo," dining scene. An interesting place for bohemians and bon vivants alike, Eclectic Cafe is a must stop for those who savor delicious cuisine, appealing wines and beers, as well as a changing atmosphere of stimulating artwork.
The Eclectic Cafe started off our meal with an assortment of appetizers ranging from bruschetta al pomadoro, toasted baguettes topped with spinach pesto, mozzarella and sundried tomatoes, as well as goat cheese with sundried tomatoes and garlic olive oil. Flavors here are intense and delicious, satisfying without being too filling.
Plenty of salads, pizza and pasta dishes to choose from for the second course, from Caesar and grilled salmon nicoise salad to a create-your-own pizza as well as a New Zealand mussels linguine. We opted to share a chicken fettucini, a very good decision because this dish is spectacular, tender morsels of chicken breast tossed with sundried tomatoes, romano cheese in a garlicky cream sauce.
Entrees tend toward hearty comfort foods such as London broil and roasted grilled chicken, although there are choices for lighter appetites, including a grilled vegetable plate, sautéed sea scallops and grilled shrimp scampi. We enjoyed a simply prepared grilled filet mignon in green peppercorn sauce, along with an order of grilled swordfish, flaky moist and very flavorful.
The Eclectic gives diners plenty of temptation when i comes to the dessert course, with two versions of creme brulee, and assorted cakes and tarts, all made in-house.
The peach cheesecake we samples was creamy smooth and the tiramisu gets good marks as signature dessert offering.
Actor/owner Brian Sheehan is very much a hands-on presence in the dining room, greeting and seating guests and making sure that everything runs smoothly.
The Eclectic Cafe is true to its moniker, delivering an interesting smattering of art, cuisine and atmosphere all rolled into one.
The cafe is open daily for lunch, nightly for dinner and weekend for bunch with jazz entertainment Thursday through Saturday evenings.
Dinner for two averages $40, with plenty of street parking.
